PASTWORKSHOPS

Discovery Day

"Unravelling Genes & Exploring DNA"

DNA separation is a technique used to separate DNA from the nucleus of the cell through precipitation. Used outside of the laboratory in DNA sequencing, forensic investigation and determining the genetic causes of diseases, DNA separation is invaluable in the field of health research.

In our Discovery Day workshop geared towards high school students, we taught students basic wet lab skills in order to run a DNA sequencing lab. Amongst the lab skills taught included how to properly use pipettes, how to use incubators and how to vortex microtubes. Students were able to apply their knowledge in a hands-on environment and learn the process through experience.

Special thanks to Hamilton Health Sciences and the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame for sponsoring this event and helping us organize it!
